ChatGPT vs Google: They're Becoming the Same Thing. Here's What Actually Matters.

Two and a half years of panic about AI search has settled one question: the old rules still win.

I first wrote a version of this article in December 2023. The headlines back then were screaming that Google was dead and that ChatGPT had won. Clients were panicking. Competitors were pivoting. And my answer at the time was hedging, because honestly, nobody knew.

Two and a half years on, I do know. And the answer is not what either side predicted.

Whether you run a medical spa, a roofing company, an accountancy practice, a law firm, or any other service business, AI search is now where a big chunk of your potential customers start their research. Not 'soon'. Now. This is a real platform shift, and it changes which businesses win.

Whatever Happened to the 'ChatGPT vs Google' Battle?

Quick Answer: It fizzled. Google added AI Overviews so it could give answers directly. ChatGPT added live search so it could pull current information. Both tools are now trying to do the same job in slightly different ways, and both need the same thing from you: content they can trust.

Back in early 2024, Gartner predicted that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 as AI chatbots took over. We're now inside the year they named, and while estimates of the exact shift vary, the direction is clear. Millions of people now start their buying research in AI tools rather than in Google's blue links. This is not a rumour or a fad. It is the present.

In late 2023, people treated ChatGPT and Google as rival species fighting for territory. The framing was simple: one of them wins, the other goes extinct.

That is not what happened.

Google rolled out AI Overviews globally. When you Google a question now, you often get an AI-written answer at the top, with small source links to the websites the AI drew from. It looks and behaves a lot like ChatGPT with a search results list underneath.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT added live web search. When you ask it a question now, it often goes out, reads current websites, and writes you an answer based on what it finds. It looks and behaves a lot like Google with conversation baked in.

They are both becoming the same thing. An answer engine that reads websites and summarises what it finds.

So the 'vs' in the title of this article was always a false question. They were never going to replace each other. They were going to merge into one new job.

So Who Actually Won?

Quick Answer: The businesses that were already being radically transparent with their website visitors. Transparent about pricing. Transparent about process. Transparent about what they're not a fit for. That's the single biggest signal AI rewards, by a mile.

Let me tell you who I see winning right now. It is not the businesses with the fanciest AI tools or the newest tactical hack. It is the ones that were already doing the right thing in 2023 and just kept going.

One thing matters more than everything else on the list, so I'll put it at the top.

Transparency is the biggest AI trust signal, by a mile

If you publish your prices, your process, your honest comparisons with competitors, and the real experiences of your customers, AI engines reward you disproportionately. Not 'contact us for a quote'. Actual pricing or actual pricing logic. Actual detail about what you do and how you do it. Actual opinions.

This is the single most important thing most business owners get wrong. The ones getting cited and recommended by AI are almost all openly transparent. The ones left invisible are almost all dodging.

Everything else winning businesses have in common

  • Their website contains specific, clear answers to the real questions their customers ask before they buy
  • They show real customer stories with real numbers, not sanitised case studies
  • They have a clear point of view and they are not afraid to state it
  • They publish regularly and keep their content current

That is it. That is the list.

Both ChatGPT and Google look at the web and try to work out which sites are trustworthy and specific enough to quote. If your site has those things on it, both tools find you. If it doesn't, neither one will.

Why 'Who Wins' Was Always the Wrong Question

Quick Answer: ChatGPT and Google are both customers of the web. They both need content, and they both reward the same kind of content. If you're writing for your buyers, you're writing for both of them automatically.

Here is the thing that too few businesses understand. Both ChatGPT and Google have the same aim: to deliver great information to their users. Their tech teams work tirelessly to find the best information and present it clearly.

They cannot do their jobs without you.

Here are some of the things that neither of them can do on their own:

  • Share your personal experience and expertise (if you haven't published it already)
  • Make your CEO brave enough to produce useful, honest content that discusses your product or service, warts and all
  • Surface your likely cost and price range to potential buyers if you haven't shared that online somewhere
  • Share the real experiences and stories of your customers
  • Create useful comparisons of your thing with your competitors

If you have not been willing to publish these things, the arrival of AI search will make no difference to your visibility. If you have been publishing them, AI search quietly accelerates your growth because both ChatGPT and Google will now surface you more often.

Hopefully you get the idea. Which tool people use doesn't matter to you. If you are getting your content right, both systems will find you. If you're getting it wrong, neither will.

What's Actually Changed Since 2023

Quick Answer: AI has flooded the web with generic content while also getting much better at spotting it. The result is that real expertise and real honesty stand out more than they did two years ago, not less. Quality has become a bigger competitive advantage, not a smaller one.

The web is drowning in digital landfill

Millions of blog posts a day now arrive on the internet written by AI with no human judgement attached to them. Click on a search result these days and there is a decent chance you land on a page AI clearly wrote, and it is bloody awful. You can bring the same touch of magic to your own content by using poor prompts and pasting the resulting text onto your website. It will do nothing for you.

Both tools are getting very good at spotting it

Neither ChatGPT nor Google wants to feed its users generic AI writing. They both now look for the signals that prove a real person with real expertise wrote the content: specific details, honest opinions, customer stories, actual pricing, measured outcomes. Generic, vague, hedge-everything content gets skipped.

Which makes real expertise more valuable than ever

Two and a half years ago, publishing thoughtful content was a nice-to-have. Today it is the single clearest way to be found. The businesses with a real voice and real experience are being quoted, cited and recommended. The businesses publishing generic content are invisible to both humans and machines.

The Three Principles That Still Win

Quick Answer: Talk about what others won't. Show what others won't. Sell in ways others won't. That was the formula in 2023 and it is the formula now. Apply it and you get found, quoted, and recommended by AI tools regardless of which one people use.

The principles of great content start by obsessing over your buyers' questions, worries and concerns, and embracing three simple commitments.

1) You must be willing to talk about what others do not in your space

Pricing. Problems. Customer complaints. Industry honest truths. If your competitors are all dodging a topic, that is the exact topic your readers most need you to address. AI tools cite specific answers. Vague ones get skipped.

2) You must be willing to show what others do not in your space

Real customer results with real numbers. Before and after examples. Screenshots. Video walkthroughs. Case studies with the boring bits left in. When AI tools choose which business to recommend, they are looking for evidence. Show yours.

3) You must be willing to sell in ways others will not in your space

Put your prices on your website. Publish clear comparisons with your competitors. Tell people who your service is not a fit for. These are the moves that build trust with both human readers and AI systems. Both reward clarity. Both punish hedging.

Nick's Insight:

I have watched clients spend thousands on fancy AI tools and new platforms over the last two and a half years, trying to outfox the algorithm or find some clever workaround. The clients actually making money from AI search did not buy any of it. They just kept writing articles that answered the specific questions their sales team hears every week. Over and over. That is the quiet truth. The panic was a distraction. The work has not changed.

Is SEO dead?

No, and it never was. SEO has just grown up. It now covers being found by AI tools ( GEO ) and being the direct answer ( AEO ) as well as ranking in Google. The underlying job is the same. Publish trustworthy, specific, useful content that answers your customers' real questions.

Will ChatGPT replace Google?

No, and Google won't replace ChatGPT either. They are converging into the same type of tool. Answer engines that pull from trusted websites. Your job is to be one of those trusted websites.

Do I need to optimise for ChatGPT specifically?

Not really. The things that work for ChatGPT (clear, specific, authoritative content) are the same things that work for Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, and every other AI tool. Write for your buyers. Both systems follow.

Is social media more important than SEO now?

Different job. Social is excellent for being discovered by people who don't yet know they need you. Search is excellent for being found by people who are looking. You probably need both, and neither replaces the need for great content on your own website.

What's the one thing to do differently in 2026?

Ask your sales team what questions they get asked before someone signs. Write an honest article answering each one. Publish them on your website. That is it. That is the whole strategy. Keep going for twelve months and you will have a content engine that works across Google, ChatGPT, and whatever comes next.
